Word-of-Mouth Remains a Key Recommendation for Aruba, Says A.T.A.

Positive Impact of ‘Word-of-Mouth’ on Aruba’s Tourism

Since May 2024, Aruba’s tourism has seen a remarkable boost, with ‘word-of-mouth’ recommendations ranking among the top three reasons tourists choose the island. This trend reflects how visitors become ambassadors of Aruba based on their positive experiences. The Aruba Tourism Authority (A.T.A.) continues its efforts to enhance marketing across various international markets to position Aruba as a preferred vacation destination. As of May 2024, 18% of visitors indicated that ‘word of mouth’ was a crucial factor in their decision to visit Aruba, alongside ‘reliable weather’ (16%) and ‘family-friendly destination’ (25%).

The Importance of Vacation Experiences

Understanding the significance of vacation experiences in Aruba is essential. A positive experience not only satisfies visitors but also turns them into enthusiastic promoters through ‘word-of-mouth’ among family and friends. A.T.A. emphasizes the “High Value-Low Impact” model, which balances four pillars: ‘Quality of Life for Residents’, ‘Quality of Visitor Experience’, ‘Protection and Preservation of Nature & Environment’, and ‘Economic Contribution of the Tourism Sector’. This strategy aims to maintain a balance while increasing visitor numbers proportionately with the island’s capacity.

Growth in Stayover Visitors
19.2% Increase in Stayover Visitors

In May 2024, Aruba welcomed 111,180 stayover visitors, marking a 16.7% increase from May 2023, when 95,366 stayover visitors were recorded. This growth is driven by expanding airline capacities, accommodating rising demand.

Spending Trends Among Visitors

Visa cardholders’ average spending per transaction reached $666 in 2024, a 19.4% increase compared to the first quarter of 2023. Overall, $185 million was spent using Visa cards during visitors’ stays in Aruba.

Visitor Demographics and Accommodation Trends

In May 2024, 80.2% of stayover visitors came from North America, 4.5% from Europe, 12.4% from Latin America, and 2.9% from other parts of the world.

  • 15.5% chose All-Inclusive hotels
  • 24.1% stayed in Timeshares
  • 33.3% opted for other types of accommodation, including short-term vacation rentals (STVRs).
Growth in Short-Term Vacation Rentals

A.T.A. tracks the availability and pricing of short-term vacation rentals, including condos and villas. In 2023, A.T.A. updated its inventory, incorporating new condominiums and listing non-hotel accommodations available for short-term stays. Comparing May 2024 with May 2023, the average occupancy rate of these accommodations rose by 9.5%, from 42.6% to 52.1%, and rental income increased by 22.7%.

Year-to-Date Visitor Statistics

As of May 2024, Aruba received 615,118 stayover visitors, an 18.7% increase compared to 518,201 in May 2023. North America continues to be the leading market, accounting for 82% of visitors, followed by Europe (4.7%), Latin America (11.1%), and other regions (2.3%).

About Aruba Tourism Authority (A.T.A.)

Since January 1, 2011, the Aruba Tourism Authority has operated as a ‘Sui Generis’ entity, an independent public organization. It functions as the ‘Destination Marketing and Management Organization’ (DMMO), responsible for promoting and managing local and international tourism interests. A.T.A. emphasizes the “High Value-Low Impact” model, aiming to enhance Aruba’s economic value, sustain its appeal as a desirable and sustainable destination, and lead in tourism development. This strategy seeks to balance growth with quality tourism, enhancing both visitor experiences and the island’s carrying capacity.
