The Dande Festival stands as Aruba’s most important traditional music celebration and a powerful symbol of cultural identity. Each year, more than 50 vocalists perform alongside traditional musical groups, presenting both newly written compositions and classic Dande songs. The Origins of Dande
The name Dande is believed to come from the Spanish word dandare, which means to travel from one place to another. This meaning reflects the heart of the tradition, musicians moving through neighborhoods to share music and goodwill.
Dande as a ritual dates back to around 1880, following the liberation of enslaved people under King Willem III. Former house slaves began visiting homes after the midnight fireworks on New Year’s Eve, playing the tambu and offering musical wishes for a prosperous year ahead. Over time, this practice evolved into a cherished cultural custom that continues to thrive today.
