Guide to Climbing the Hooiberg in Aruba

If you’re visiting Aruba and looking for a unique workout with a stunning view, climbing the Hooiberg is a must. This cone-shaped hill, standing 165 meters (541 feet) tall, is located near the center of the island. While it’s not the highest peak in Aruba—that title goes to Jamanota at 189 meters (620 feet)—Hooiberg’s solitary, steep presence makes it a memorable climb. Its name, “Hooiberg,” means “Haystack” in Dutch due to its resemblance to a haystack, though it’s actually made of a hard rock unique to Aruba, called hooibergite.

What to Expect

Climbing the Hooiberg means taking on around 600 steep steps to reach the top, but the journey is well worth it. The climb itself can be challenging, but the path is accessible and safe. Along the way, you might spot local wildlife such as wild goats, colorful parakeets, and lizards.

Why Visit Hooiberg?

At the peak, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking, panoramic views of nearly the entire island. Hooiberg stands out against Aruba’s generally flat landscape, making it visible from nearly every point on the island. As a symbol of Aruba rising from the sea, the Hooiberg is even depicted on the Aruban Coat of Arms.

Whether you’re looking for a short but intense hike, a scenic viewpoint, or a touch of Aruba’s natural charm, the Hooiberg is worth the climb. Remember to bring water, wear comfortable shoes, plenty of sunscreen, and prepare for a one-of-a-kind adventure!
