Economic Growth

Revitalizing San Nicolas is a top priority for the Wever-Croes II Cabinet. Efforts are underway to realize this and other projects. Another exciting project is the World War II Memorial in Seroe Colorado, set to be finished by mid-year. It will draw more visitors to San Nicolas, enriching its vibrant atmosphere.

Furthermore, plans are in place to rejuvenate Mainstreet San Nicolas, beginning in early 2024. The Economy and Nature Ministries are collaborating to enhance San Nicolas as a premier destination. This demonstrates the Government’s dedication to Aruba and, specifically, to San Nicolas.
The Government is working closely with the San Nicolas Business Alliance to expedite these projects.
“We believe these projects can enhance both Aruba and San Nicolas. Therefore, we are committed to working diligently to make them a reality. This is our pledge to Aruba and San Nicolas,” said the Prime Minister, full of hope.

But when is enough? How many hotels can the island sustain without ruining it? I’ve been coming for over 20 years, seen many hotels and restaurants turn over, seen so many visitors and cars increased. Hotels have power outages roads flood, so much trash on the beaches and in the water at the hotels . Can’t just keep putting up hotels without focusing on the infrastructure too! There has to be a limit or the reason people come back year after year will be gone!
I was born during the War, to expat parents, an American school teacher for Esso and a Dutch banker who was head cashier for the Lago Oil and Transport Co.,Ltd, located on the tip of southeastern Aruba. I lived in the Lago Colony above the babies’ beach on the Little Lagoon and the playground beach at the edge of the Big Lagoon, named for Captain Rodgers, Rodgers’ Beach. 1944-1962, Lago Colony was my hometown. Then, being an expat, I had to leave and it was always the assumption that we would all go to our parent’s country for university. I had two continents to meet that criteria. Being born on the island had nothing to do with my citizenship. Citizenship came via my parents, not from my site of birth. However, Lago Colony will always be my home and where my heart lives. Building to attract tourist coins, at the cost of having to IMPORT MORE and MORE workers from other islands and countries is not practical when you only have 74 square miles of land to call Aruba.
Don’t know what Aruba you’re talking about but I have been going for the last 14 years and seen o thing of what you mention. It’s always packed and busy I was there just in March still the same restaurants are there and it’s clean friendly. So surprised you say this ???
I was in Aruba this past September, and it was clean and beautiful. Not sure what part of Aruba you’re speaking of? From what I saw for the first time, it was spectacular ❤️ no trash on the beaches, it in the water. Stayed at the Barcelo, and can’t wait to visit Aruba again.

Please put some money into updating downtown Aruba. This is the first area tourists see when they come off the ships or drive from the airport to Eagle and Palm beach. There are abandoned and run down buildings and downtown could be so much more. I agree with others that Aruba government keeps allowing more hotels, and lacks an interest in improving what we have. We have a home in Tierra del Sol and would like to see the stretch road to our community paved properly. I don’t know how many times you can patch a road? We appreciate that the government added a jogging path to the kite/windsurfing areas, but Aruba must improve roads, downtown and work on better infrastructure to ride bikes around the island, which will take cars off the roads. In the years since we purchased our home, the number of cars have grown exponentially.
We’ve been visiting since 2001 and then bought 2 weeks at the C L. We agree too many resorts are being built but we don’t know the reason behind the surge of new resorts. There’s a monster size resort being built north of C L, I hope the new visitors don’t start intruding on our beach but I’m thinking it’s coming.
With the dumb law that says anyone can use a palapa in front of any resort, I can see problems when other resort visitors start claiming areas that should belong to the resort owners. Depending on how bad it gets, we’ve already contemplated selling, wait n see. Too much.
We like the infrastructure changes like more speed bumps and round-abouts, that was really nice.
Enough Stop Over Building
It’s such a shame that one of the last quiet laid back places like Baby Beach will now include a huge hotel. When will it end? The airport and sewage treatment facility already have enough problems. We choose Aruba year after year due to the relaxed vibe and open space which seems to be dwindling more and more every year. Enough of the greed already. In our opinion, Aruba is already past the point of being maxed out!

I agree. Way too many hotels going up, ruining the happy vibe of Aruba. Not enough employees and too many tourists, water treatment plant, sewerage system already maxed out.
People even fight on beaches over palapas etc. The government is ruining the island, it’s sad, the locals are not happy and give it 5-10yrs and Aruba won’t be the happy island. Crime is going to skyrocket, prices are already soaring and eventually people are going to find other places to visit.

The island already can’t handle it. It doesn’t have the infrastructure, namely sewage treatment. The beach water at the Hyatt was cloudy and smelled of sewage in March 2024. A local paper noted issues with the sewage treatment plant not being updated to handle the tourist population.

We’ve been coming to Aruba for almost 30 and one of our most enjoyable day trips was driving out to the far end of the island and enjoying getting away from the hustle and bustle. Maybe a few drinks at Rum Reef, walk through the old ruins, walk down to Baby Beach, then get back in our vehicle and just randomly drive around and enjoy the area, usually get lost for a bit, maybe find something we never saw before.
In my opinion, and agreeing with so many others, the leadership of Aruba has lost its way. One of the reasons people come to Aruba is to get away from the hustle and bustle back home. For years people have been saying the build up in Aruba is ruining the Island, but it continues, year after year. On our last trip we now see the bib box stores, gee, just like at home. How sad to see the island turning into the big city. More vehicles, more roads, more traffic.
And after reading the article on this new Secrets resort, it sounds like this is just the first step of opening the flood gates to over development of the that end of the Island. Soon to overrun with more building, more vehicles, more planes.
I miss the old Aruba.
