Department of Meteorology Aruba issues heat advisory

Aruba can sometimes experience extreme heat that may pose risks to both locals and visitors.

Prolonged hot and humid weather is expected this weekend into early next week. A weak pressure gradient due to a disturbance at different levels will cause a weak variable wind flow. This feature will remain in place until the disturbance clears the Caribbean area. High temperatures from Friday through Tuesday should range from 34 to 36 degrees Celsius, with humidities in the low to high 80’s and 90’s. This will make for heat index values (apparent temperatures) around 40 to 45 degrees each day. The heat and humidity will not subside much at night, with temperatures only dropping into the high 20’s, at 27 to 28 degrees Celsius.

Risks of Extreme Heat:

Exposure to excessive heat can lead to various health problems, including heat exhaustion, heatstroke, dehydration, and sunburn. These conditions can affect anyone, but certain individuals, such as the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with pre-existing medical conditions, are particularly vulnerable.

Heat Advisory Guidelines:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, throughout the day to stay hydrated. Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol or caffeinated beverages, as they can contribute to dehydration.
  2. Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing that allows your skin to breathe. Opt for a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from the sun.
  3. Seek Shade: If possible, stay in shaded areas during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Limit exposure to direct sunlight and find shelter under umbrellas, palm trees, or in air-conditioned spaces.
  4. Apply Sunscreen: Use sunscreen with a high SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or above to shield your skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Reapply every few hours, especially after swimming or excessive sweating.
  5. Take Breaks and Cool Down: Pace yourself and take regular breaks in cooler areas. Utilize air-conditioned spaces, fans, or take a dip in the ocean to lower your body temperature.
  6. Plan Outdoor Activities Wisely: If engaging in outdoor activities, try to schedule them during the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are relatively cooler.
  7. Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Keep an eye on children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses to ensure they are staying cool and hydrated.
  8. Stay Informed: Stay updated with weather forecasts and heed the advice of local authorities regarding heat warnings or any recommended precautions.
