Discovering the beauty of Aruba can be a truly unique experience, whether you’re cycling through its scenic landscapes or exploring its rugged terrain on foot. With diverse options for biking and hiking, Aruba offers something for everyone, from leisurely coastal rides to challenging mountain trails. Below are some of the best biking routes and hiking trails that showcase the island’s breathtaking scenery.
Bike Routes in Aruba
Aruba’s varied landscapes provide an excellent opportunity for cyclists of all skill levels. Whether you prefer a relaxing ride along the coastline or an adventurous journey through rugged terrain, there are plenty of options.
Jamanota Trail
The Jamanota Trail takes hikers through the scenic landscapes of Arikok National Park, leading to the peaks of Sero Jamanota and Masiduri. As the highest point on the island at 188 meters, Sero Jamanota offers stunning panoramic views of Aruba. Along the trail, you will encounter a variety of wildlife and plant life, including rare bird species and hills covered in cacti. The Masiduri viewpoint provides a glimpse into past conservation efforts, with remnants of eucalyptus growth experiments that now symbolize the importance of preserving nature in the area.
To hike this trail, you must purchase an entrance ticket in advance at the park’s visitor center, as they are not available at the trailhead. Be sure to bring at least 2 liters of water per person, start early to avoid the midday heat, and wear protective clothing and sturdy hiking shoes, as the path can be rough and lined with sharp stones.
Bushiribana Trail
For those looking for a more adventurous hike, the trail from Calbas to Wariruri Bay, Boedoei, and the ruins of Bushiribana offers a journey across Aruba’s northern coast. Starting in the Calbas neighborhood on the outskirts of Oranjestad, the trail winds through cacti-lined paths before reaching Wariruri Bay, where a small beach awaits. The route then continues along cliffs through Boedoei Bay, eventually arriving at the historic ruins of Bushiribana, a former gold stamping factory from the 19th-century gold rush.
Keep in mind that this trail offers little to no shade, and the heat can be intense, especially later in the day. It is recommended to wear sunscreen, protective clothing, and set out early to avoid the hottest hours.
Alto Vista Trail
Starting from the historic Alto Vista Chapel, which dates back to 1952 and stands on the site where Aruba’s first inhabitants are believed to have converted to Christianity, the Alto Vista Trail offers a short but beautiful hike through the island’s cacti-covered hills. The trail follows the Alto Vista path and briefly extends along the northern Fireman Trail to Beach Road, where you can enjoy sweeping views of Boca Cora Bay.
As with other hikes in Aruba, there is no shade along this trail, and the heat intensifies early in the day. Be sure to start your hike in the cooler morning hours, wear sunscreen and protective clothing, and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.
