New Taxi Regulations Spark Protests in Oranjestad, Aruba
Great news for families and tourists traveling together! The Ministry of Transport, Integrity, Nature, and Elderly Adult has announced a new decree that makes getting around easier and more comfortable for larger groups. However, not everyone is happy about the change.
What’s New?
More Seats in Taxis!
- Taxis can now have up to 7 passenger seats instead of just 5. This means you can travel together as a group without needing multiple taxis.
- This change is effective immediately, so you can start enjoying more spacious rides right away!
Transition Time for Taxi Operators
- Taxi operators with vehicles that currently have more than 7 passenger seats (excluding the driver’s seat) need to adjust their vehicles to meet the new regulations.
- They have until September 30, 2024, to make these changes.
Protests in Oranjestad
In response to these new regulations, taxi drivers in Oranjestad have taken to the streets in protest. They argue that the new requirements place an undue financial burden on them and disrupt their operations. The protests have drawn attention to the concerns of drivers who feel the changes were made without sufficient consultation or consideration of their needs.
Ensuring Compliance
Despite the protests, the Department of Public Transport will begin enforcing the new seating regulations starting October 1, 2024. Here’s what happens if the rules aren’t followed:
- First Violation: 30-day suspension of the taxi license.
- Second Violation: 90-day suspension of the taxi license.
- Third Violation: Permanent revocation of the taxi license.
Consideration for Passengers During Control
- If a taxi is found to have more than 7 seats and is carrying passengers, the driver will be allowed to complete the trip before making the necessary changes.

So the government is worried about tourists being comfortable in taxis but cares nothing about them renting unsafe ATV/UTVS? Interesting,,,

An example of politicians actions ruining a well operating enterprise. Has to be more to this stop, somehow the government will win and hard working folks will lose and ultimately drive up the costs for taxis for the tourists who will then turn to rentals thus not actually decreasing traffic. Humm but it will drive up the revenues the government can’t tax so more in their coffers. Starting to operate the government of some other countries.

I disagree with this new rule. I think that will be a terrible hardship on the drivers. Things are so expensive as it is. and now would have to purchase a larger vehicle and assume the higher costs of running them. Worried about the tourist.???? Fix the sewer problem. thats more important for all
Why doesn’t the government tax the hotels that are going up everywhere. It’s an effin shame!
Everything has a cause and effect. My family has been vacationing in Aruba for the past 17 years. During that time there was a period where the government felt that the island was being oversaturated with hotels, resulting in a ban on new ones. My how times have changed. Marriott is taking over the island. The island should be renamed, “Aruba by Marriott”. There are 7 existing or new properties being built (Courtyard Aruba, St. Regis Aruba Resort being built now, Ritz-Carlton, Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino, Aruba Surf Club, Aruba Ocean Club, and Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino. Not to mention others (e.g. Embassy Suites, etc.) So the government claims they are trying to improve the comfort of the visitors, as they continually try to bring more in with all the accommodations being built. I support the taxi drivers and hope that common sense prevails.
Why not make a rule that larger vehicles can carry more passengers than the current rule of 5 and leave the smaller cars alone! So they want couples taking these larger taxis which will add more emissions, use more gas, etc?? This makes zero sense!
Are the larger cars going to start ride sharing if you’re only 1 or 2 passengers.? This is ridiculous!
I think this is a ridiculous rule – makes no sense at all. The government should focus on fixing the sewer treatment plant which is very broken.
The gov’t is concerned about the “comfort” of the tourists riding in small taxis? Seriously? They should be more concerned about the quality of the air we breathe. Foul stench coming from the waste treatment plant on Eagle Beach forces many tourists (especially asthmatics) to spend their vacation days in a hotel room.
how about taking credit cards in addition to cash to accommodate the tourists.

Restaurants forget it a lot of people are canceling reservations because they fear they will not get a ride back
I’ve been coming to Aruba for 22 years and have seen lots of change over the years and not for the better. The constant building of new hotels the additional traffic and the higher prices to stay at the hotel are becoming a deterrent not a benefit for tourists! What was so attractive about Aruba was the beautiful beaches, which are now strewn with trash because they are overcrowded with thoughtless people are no longer so beautiful. Everything has become too commercialized and expensive! Noe to screw with the taxi drivers with this mandates is just too much! There are beautiful beaches on other islands and in the south in the US to try. When government gets involved things are surely going to get f*&*ed up!
I was in Aurba 2 weeks ago and talking with our taxi driver I find these new regulations unfair. It’s really just a scam for the government to get more money from its people. The new regulations punish those taxi drivers that are hard workers. I hope the people can fight this and win. And these new regulations will increase taxi fares on the island. I have no respect for their government.
